Variations Dessin

The Musée d'Art de Toulon (MAT) is exhibiting the most representative works from its graphic collection of more than 700 works. This presentation, which is all the more rare because of the fragility of works on paper, invites visitors to explore the museum's reserves. It's a unique opportunity to discover little-known treasures and learn about the evolution of drawing over the centuries.

With 90 works divided into five sections, the MAT offers a complete panorama of drawing in all its forms: studies, academies, travel notebooks, and representations of sculpture and architecture. Preparatory drawings for government commissions, sketches for large-scale compositions and pencil sketches of plein-air landscapes reveal the creative freedom and experimentation of each artist. The MAT's collection of drawings was built up at the beginning of the 19th century thanks to the generosity of artists and collectors, often from Toulon, who enriched their city's heritage through gifts and bequests.

The collection of contemporary art was created at the beginning of the 1980s thanks to the initiative of Marie-Claude Beaud, curator of the Toulon Museum, who foresaw the importance and diversity of this medium. The recent acquisition of 400 watercolours from the Naval Botanical Gardens in Toulon shows that the graphic arts collections of the Musée d'Art de Toulon are still growing.
