Tucked away in the heart of Aix-en-Provence stands an elegant 18th-century hôtel particulier that art lovers have long kept to themselves. Fifteen years ago, its owner fulfilled a dream: to breathe new life into this former family residence by opening it to exhibitions and bringing together art, gastronomy and hospitality under one roof. Thus Gallifet was born — a contemporary art centre with lofty, light-filled galleries overlooking a 500 sq m tree-shaded courtyard, home to an open-air restaurant throughout the summer.
Over the years, Gallifet has presented ambitious group exhibitions showcasing both emerging contemporary artists and established names. What fewer people know is that once night falls and this peaceful haven closes its doors, guests can continue the story by stepping into Appartement Gallifet on the upper floors. Bathed in natural light, this elegant 75 sq m apartment combines soft, muted tones with blond parquet flooring and traditional terracotta tiles. It features a bedroom, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen and a bathroom. The walls are adorned with works from past exhibitions at the art centre, including pieces by François Arnal, Jean-Pierre Formica and Morgane Baroghel-Crucq.
Guests enjoy a privileged vantage point from which to witness the installation of new exhibitions or even take part in private tours led by the exhibiting artists themselves. At the moment, they can also discover the world of photographer François Halard through a remarkable exhibition bringing together more than one hundred photographs, several of which are being shown publicly for the very first time.
Living between Paris, the South of France and Greece, Halard has developed a body of work shaped by the history and memory of the places that continue to inspire him. His photographs move seamlessly from the landscapes of Greece and Italy to the studios of the great modern masters, from the gardens of Giverny to the intimate interiors of an Arles townhouse. Together they form a deeply poetic journey, guided by the artist's enduring pursuit of beauty.
