This exhibition offers a rediscovery of the kingdom designed for Lothaire I, Charlemagne's grandson. This vast territory stretching from the North Sea to the Mediterranean is now part of Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Italy. The exhibition dedicated to artistic Lotharingia presents the pivotal role played by the Lotharingian world at the turn of the 1st and 2nd millennia. The diplomatic relations of the Carolingian sovereigns with the Byzantine Empire were directly reflected in the artistic gesture, through the travels of artists, works and materials.
More than 40 lenders from national and international museums are taking part in this project, bringing together a wide range of fascinating works from this singular period of the Early Middle Ages. Whether precious or ordinary, works from Lotharingia reflect the great creativity of the period. This unique temporary exhibition explores a period that has been forgotten by the general public, but which nonetheless helped to shape contemporary European spaces.
