Challenges and sports, from Antiquity to the Renaissance

The focus of the exhibition, devoted to the history of sporting challenges from Antiquity to the early Renaissance, echoes the organisation of the next Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris and France. From a historical point of view, it was only natural to turn first to the Ancient Greek Olympic Games, founded according to tradition in 776 BC and which Pierre de Coubertin sought to restore from 1896 onwards. The exhibition retraces this theme chronologically, starting with the Greek world, with an excursus on Etruscan civilisation, and continuing with the Roman Empire. The visit concludes with a presentation of the challenges and sporting practices of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The exhibition is accompanied by a range of cultural and outreach activities, both in situ and off-site. Access to the programme is free on presentation of an exhibition ticket.
