Founded in 1990, the eac. holds a collection of abstract art unique in France, the Donation Albers-Honegger. Its mission is threefold: conservation and valorisation of the Albers-Honegger collection; research, centred around temporary exhibitions and artist residencies; education, with mediations and workshops.
In this new cycle of rereading its permanent collection, the eac. has chosen to honor two major artists of the French abstract scene. Cécile Bart and Ode Bertrand are the tandem guests of this 2023 edition, in dialogue not only with each other, but also with a selection of works from the Albers-Honegger Donation.
Their works experiment with the notion of weave and mesh, playing with the viewer's eye and, by the same token, with the scale of their works, ranging from the infinitely small for one to more monumental works for the other. The question of rhythm also runs through their respective approaches.
Lucioles marks the second stage in the collaboration between the Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap) and the eac, with an exhibition featuring a selection of works from the Les Trois Ourses collection, alongside others from the Cnap design collection.
The main aim of the association Les Trois Ourses (1988-2018) is to educate children in the arts by placing books at the center of their thinking. This is based on the founding work of Bruno Munari, who, like Gottfried Honegger, pays particular attention to children and the pedagogy of art. The book then comes to life, animated sometimes by the line of the drawing (Lissitzky, Cvach, Komagata...), sometimes by a play of folds, even of volume (Rodchenko, Bataille, Cox, Komagata...), sometimes by the rustle of the pages (Munari, Curtil, Godard...), and invites children and adults to multiple discoveries and reflections on what a book is.
Co-founder of the Nul group in 1959, Herman de Vries shares a radical approach with the Zero movement: he rejects colour and gives priority to geometric forms and seriality. After long journeys to India and the Seychelles (1970), the Dutch artist discovered that true art was that of nature, and formulated his work as follows: "My poetry is the world".
The eac. is putting design in the spotlight by hosting, in partnership with the Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation in Monaco, an exhibition devoted to a little-known aspect of Francis Bacon's work: furniture design in the early 1930s. It highlights his influences, as well as the traces of this period throughout his career, around the figures of Sonia Delaunay, Eileen Gray, Fernand Léger, Le Corbusier, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Charlotte Perriand and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
The exhibition, curated by physicist Pierre Coullet, aims to bring science back into the world of culture, particularly art and the history of civilisations. The theme of "art and geometry" is explored through the work of artists Jean-Philippe Roubaud, Victor Vasarely and Edmond Vernassa, and through the use of optical devices. The exhibition has been awarded the "Year of Physics 2023-2024" label.
As part of this re-reading of its permanent collection, the eac. is also putting design in the spotlight by inviting resident designers from the Jardin des métiers d'art et du design (JAD) in Sèvres to delve into the Albers-Honegger collection and select works with which they feel a 'resonance'.
