A Tribute to Théo Van Rysselberghe
One hundred years ago, on 13 December 1926, Théo Van Rysselberghe passed away in the villa that now bears his name in Le Lavandou, leaving behind a considerable body of work and an indelible mark on the Var coastline that he had made his own.
As a co-founder of the famous Les XX group in Belgium, he was one of the key figures in fostering the artistic exchange between Brussels and Paris. His encounter with Georges Seurat and his theory of the division of tones was a true revelation for him. Under his brush, this scientific technique of divided brushstrokes is transformed into pure poetry. Joining his friend Henri-Edmond Cross in Le Lavandou, he made this fishing village his permanent home, gathering around him a circle of free spirits who turned this corner of the Var into an intellectual and artistic hub of rare intensity.
Today, the place that was his final studio pays tribute to him through an exhibition conceived in the spirit of openness and high standards that characterised this remarkable man. It brings together works from private collections, whilst also benefiting from loans from museums.
